What is a Fire Extinguisher?   

A fire extinguisher is a portable metal cylinder filled with a high-pressure extinguishing agent used to put out or help to reduce the spread of small fires. Fire extinguishers operate on the principle that fire needs oxygen, heat, and fuel to burn; By applying an agent that can remove oxygen, cool the temperature, or smother the fuel, the fire can be extinguished.

 Important Safety Reminder from NFPA:  

To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS: 

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism. 

Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire. 

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. 

Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
